When to Book a Removal Company in the UK

Start asking about availability when you have a likely moving date. Before committing, get clear answers about the booking, access and date changes.

Contact removal companies once you have a likely moving date and enough information to describe the job. Before paying to secure a booking, understand what the firm is confirming and what happens if your date changes.

There is no single lead time we can promise for every UK move. Availability depends on the company and the work you need it to do. Ask about your actual date rather than relying on a national rule of thumb.

The short answer

Start the conversation before every detail is settled, but be clear about what remains provisional. Give the company both addresses, the likely date, an outline of the contents and any access issues you already know about. Ask whether it needs a survey before it can quote.

Then separate three questions: can it provide a quote, can it currently accommodate your date, and what makes the booking confirmed? Do not assume one answer covers all three.

If your purchase or tenancy arrangements are still being agreed, ask the relevant professional what you can treat as confirmed. Tell the mover exactly where things stand. Ask it to explain the options it actually offers for uncertain dates, along with any conditions.

Keep the written answer. When several people are coordinating the move, it helps to have one record showing the service, date, payment requirements and outstanding decisions.

The dates that sell out first

Treat the date you want as an availability question, not a prediction. If you need a Friday, month-end or school-holiday move, name that date when you enquire. We do not have a verified local availability dataset that lets us rank which dates will sell out first.

If you have genuine flexibility, offer specific alternatives. “We could move on Tuesday or Wednesday” gives the company something concrete to check. Do not offer dates you cannot use merely to obtain a quote.

Ask whether the whole service is available: collection, packing if needed, and delivery. A firm being able to collect on your date does not answer when your belongings can reach the new home if storage is involved.

Keep a note of who checked availability and when. Before committing, ask the company to reconfirm its position rather than relying on an earlier conversation.

Booking timelines by season

Use the season to prompt questions about your job, rather than to choose an unsupported number of weeks. The table below is a planning aid, not a booking forecast.

If your move involves…Ask the company…Prepare…
A fixed summer dateCan you cover this exact date and the services listed?Your inventory and any date flexibility
An autumn or winter moveAre there access or timing details you need us to check?Information about entrances, parking and delivery access
A spring move near a bank holidayCan you confirm collection and delivery arrangements? The dates you can actually use
A school-holiday moveCan you accommodate our household's fixed dates?Your preferred date and any realistic alternatives

For any season, the useful next step is the same: obtain an answer from the firm that would do your move. Do not interpret a quieter-looking calendar as confirmation that you can leave booking until later.

If you need specialist handling, tell the company before it checks availability. Describe the item and ask how it would be assessed. A general quote request with that detail missing does not give the mover the same job to plan.

Booking late and still getting a decent move

If moving day is close, send a complete enquiry rather than a series of partial messages. Put the proposed date, addresses, inventory, access and requested services together. State which parts are fixed and which can change.

Ask directly: “Can you complete this move on these terms, and what do you still need before you can confirm?” If the firm cannot do it, ask whether another date would work for the entire job. Treat any suggestion as something to confirm, not an automatic reservation.

Consider practical adjustments only if they suit your household. You might pack yourself instead of requesting packing, or separate collection and delivery with storage between them. Ask for a revised written quote covering the changed plan; do not assume the original price still applies.

Urgency is a reason to make the information clearer. Keep checking the scope, payment arrangements and cancellation terms even if there is little time. If a quote leaves an important detail unanswered, ask before committing.

Have a fallback plan for the things the mover cannot confirm. For example, if you are considering storage, establish who will arrange it and how the later delivery will be booked. Avoid making two bookings whose dates depend on each other without explaining that dependency to both providers.

Our guide to storage between moving dates explains what to check if you need a gap between collection and delivery.

What to have ready before you book

Prepare a single description of the move that you can update and share consistently:

  • Collection and delivery addresses, including floors and entrances.
  • The moving date, its confirmation status and any workable alternatives.
  • A room-by-room list of belongings, including outbuildings and storage areas.
  • Large or awkward items that need assessment.
  • Parking, carrying distances, lift arrangements and access restrictions.
  • Whether you want packing, dismantling, reassembly or storage.
  • Your contact details and the person who will be available on the day.

Ask the company how it wants to check the contents and access. Follow its survey process where required rather than assuming photographs or a list will always be sufficient.

Before paying, get a written record of what you are buying: the agreed service, date, price, inclusions and exclusions. Read the terms for date changes, cancellation and any required payments. Ask about the applicable cover and how to raise a problem; do not assume every firm has the same arrangements.

After booking, keep the company updated if the date, access or inventory changes. Ask it to confirm the effect on the service and price. Keep the latest version of the plan easy to find so you and the mover are working from the same information.

Put your move details in one place, then return to your draft when it suits you. This is a survey, not a quote or a booking.

Frequently asked questions

Should I wait until my moving date is certain to contact a mover?
You can enquire earlier and explain that the date is provisional. Ask what the company can quote or reserve in that situation, and what would make the booking binding under its terms.
Does receiving a quote mean my date is booked?
Do not assume so. Ask what confirms the booking and obtain written confirmation that your date and agreed services have been secured.
What should I do if the date changes after booking?
Contact the mover promptly. Refer to its terms and ask for written confirmation of revised availability, charges and arrangements before relying on the new plan.
Can I book at short notice?
Ask firms about your exact job and date. We cannot promise availability. A complete inventory and clear access information let them assess the request without having to guess what the move involves.
